What Hypnosis and NLP Actually Are

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention, in this state the subconscious mind can be more easily changed. It is closer to a calm feeling than anything mysterious. NLP, or neuro-linguistic programming, is the study of how your mind processes experience, and how the language you run in your own head shapes what your body does and who you are.

Fighters tend to assume performance is decided entirely in the gym. Mostly, it isn't. Reaction speed, composure when you're hit, the split-second call to commit or hold. These are run by the subconscious mind, faster than conscious thought can keep up with. Hypnosis and NLP work directly at that level: not replacing the hours in the gym, but making sure your mind stops getting in its own way when it matters.

02In Practice

Built Into Your Training

This isn't a separate practice you do instead of training. It's built into the sessions you're already running by anchoring your breath and peripheral vision before you spar, so your body finds that state on command instead of chasing it under pressure. Rehearsing the walk to the ring until your subconscious mind already knows the way. Working through the one exchange that keeps replaying in your head until it stops needing your attention.

By fight week, you're not trying to remember a technique mid-round. You've trained your subconscious mind to run the show, which means there's one less thing for your conscious mind to get in the way of.

In camp

Sessions are shaped around what's actually coming up — a specific opponent, a recurring habit under fatigue, a fear that keeps surfacing in the third round.

In sparring

Techniques get tested live, not just talked through — so composure under pressure is trained the same way power and timing are.

Fight week

Work narrows to the walk-out, the first exchange, and staying present when the crowd and the nerves show up.

“Absolutely mental. Its about how hard you can push yourself”

— Mark Antoney

With one client, we used Holotropic Breathwork to break through the tension before it even reached conscious awareness. From there, we anchored a calm, focused state he could return to on command. Then a simple lesson on ontology because fear might not be what you think it is.

With a fighter in Thailand, the work was about changing how his mind was actually running things. Shifting him into a state where he could react in a fight without thinking his way through it. His body already knew what to do.
